Fifth Sunday of Lent

Lord, who throughout these forty days

1 Lord, who throughout these forty days,
For us did fast and pray,
Teach us with you to overcome our sins,
And close by you to stay.

2 As you with Satan did contend,
And did the vict'ry win,
O give us strength in you to fight,
In you to conquer sin.

3 As you did hunger and did thirst,
So teach us, gracious Lord,
To die to self, and so to live
By your most holy word.

4 And through these days of penitence,
And through your Passion-tide,
Forevermore, in life and death,
O Lord, with us abide.

5 Abide with us that when this life
Of suffering and of pain,
An Easter of unending joy
We may at last attain!

The Introductory Rites

Greeting

- In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

- Amen.

- The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,

and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

And with your spirit. (Et cum spiritu tuo.)

Penitential Act

- Brethren (brothers and sisters), let us acknowledge our sins,

and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

I confess to almighty God

and to you, my brothers and sisters,

that I have greatly sinned,

in my thoughts and in my words,

in what I have done and

in what I have failed to do,

And, striking their breast, continue:

through my fault, through my fault,

through my most grievous fault;

therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin,

all the Angels and Saints,

and you, my brothers and sisters,

to pray for me to the Lord, our God.

---------------------

OR

The Priest, or the Deacon says:

- You were sent to heal the contrite of heart:

Lord, have mercy  (or  Kyrie, eleison).

Christ, have mercy (or  Christe, eleison).

Christ, have mercy (or  Christe, eleison).

- You are seated at the right hand of the Father to intercede for us:

Lord, have mercy  (or  Kyrie, eleison).

forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.

The Liturgy of the Word

You can follow the Readings also in other languages:

First Reading

Isaiah 43:16-21

Thus says the LORD,
who opens a way in the sea
and a path in the mighty waters,
who leads out chariots and horsemen,
            a powerful army,
till they lie prostrate together, never to rise,
snuffed out and quenched like a wick.
Remember not the events of the past,
            the things of long ago consider not;
see, I am doing something new!
Now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
In the desert I make a way,
            in the wasteland, rivers.
Wild beasts honor me,
            jackals and ostriches,
for I put water in the desert
            and rivers in the wasteland
for my chosen people to drink,
the people whom I formed for myself,
that they might announce my praise.

- The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm

Psalm 126:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6.

R.The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

When the LORD brought back the captives of Zion,
           we were like men dreaming.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
           and our tongue with rejoicing.

R. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

Then they said among the nations,
“The LORD has done great things for them.”
The LORD has done great things for us;
           we are glad indeed.

R. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

Restore our fortunes, O LORD,
like the torrents in the southern desert.
Those that sow in tears
           shall reap rejoicing.

R. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

Although they go forth weeping,
carrying the seed to be sown,
They shall come back rejoicing,
           carrying their sheaves.

R. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

Second Reading

Philippians 3:8-14

Brothers and sisters:
I consider everything as a loss
because of the supreme good of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.
For his sake I have accepted the loss of all things
and I consider them so much rubbish,
that I may gain Christ and be found in him,
not having any righteousness of my own based on the law
but that which comes through faith in Christ,
the righteousness from God,
depending on faith to know him and the power of his resurrection
and the sharing of his sufferings by being conformed to his death,
if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

It is not that I have already taken hold of it
or have already attained perfect maturity,
but I continue my pursuit in hope that I may possess it,
since I have indeed been taken possession of by Christ Jesus.
Brothers and sisters, I for my part
do not consider myself to have taken possession.
Just one thing: forgetting what lies behind
but straining forward to what lies ahead,
I continue my pursuit toward the goal,
the prize of God’s upward calling, in Christ Jesus.

- The word of the Lord.

Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation

Joel 2:12-13

R. Praise to You, Lorg Jesus Christ,
King of endless Glory

Even now, says the Lord,
return to me with your whole heart;
for I am gracious and merciful.

R. Praise to You, Lorg Jesus Christ,
King of endless Glory

Gospel

John 8:1-11

- The Lord be with you.

- And with your spirit.

- A reading from the holy Gospel according to John

- Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area,
and all the people started coming to him,
and he sat down and taught them.
Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman
who had been caught in adultery
and made her stand in the middle.
They said to him,
“Teacher, this woman was caught
in the very act of committing adultery.
Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women.
So what do you say?”
They said this to test him,
so that they could have some charge to bring against him.
Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.
But when they continued asking him,
he straightened up and said to them,
“Let the one among you who is without sin
be the first to throw a stone at her.”
Again he bent down and wrote on the ground.
And in response, they went away one by one,
beginning with the elders.
So he was left alone with the woman before him.
Then Jesus straightened up and said to her,
“Woman, where are they?
Has no one condemned you?”
She replied, “No one, sir.”
Then Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn you.
Go, and from now on do not sin any more.”

-The Gospel of the Lord

- Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Creed

I believe in one God,

the Father almighty,

maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;

through him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation

he came down from heaven,

and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,

and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory

to judge the living and the dead

and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified,

who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead

and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayer of the Faithful

Assured Lord of your infinite love and forgiveness, with humility and confidence we turn to you in prayer.Let us pray together saying:

R. Lord hear our prayer.

1.In today’s gospel Jesus lays out a challenge to us when he says “If there is one of you who has not sinned, let him be the first to throw a stone”. We pray for the grace to be kind and charitable in our daily lives, to refrain from judging others and to recognise that as Christians, God is our only judge.

We pray to the Lord.          R. Lord hear our prayer.

2. Today’s gospel reminds us of the importance which Jesus places  on forgiveness. We pray for the grace to forgive those who have wronged us and for a spirit of reconciliation among feuding families and neighbours.

We pray to the Lord.          R. Lord hear our prayer.

3. We pray for an end to intolerance in the world wherever it resides, whether in our own home, our country, our Church or in our own lives.

We pray to the Lord.          R. Lord hear our prayer.

4. On this Fifth Sunday of Lent, we pray for all those engaged in giving, in works of charity, and in penitential exercises, that their commitment, sacrifices and good intentions be blessed and rewarded by the Lord.

We pray to the Lord.          R. Lord hear our prayer.

5. We bow our heads and remember in silence our own personal intentions and the intentions of those who have asked for our prayers. (pause)

We pray to the Lord.          R. Lord hear our prayer.

Lord, we ask that you hear these prayers and grant us new life and hope through faith in your infinite love, forgiveness and generosity.  We ask this through Christ, our Lord,

- Amen.

O, Sacred Heart Surrounded

1 O sacred Head surrounded
By crown of piercing thorn!
O bleeding Head, so wounded,
Reviled and put to scorn!
The pow'r of death comes o'er you,
The glow of life decays,
Yet angel hosts adore you
And tremble as they gaze.

2 I see your strength and vigor
All fading in the strife,
And death with cruel rigor,
Bereaving you of life;
O agony and dying!
O love to sinners free!
Jesus, all grace supplying,
O turn your face on me.

3 In this, your bitter passion,
Good Shepherd, think of me
With your most sweet compassion,
Unworthy though I be:
Beneath your cross abiding
For ever would I rest,
In your dear love confiding,
And with your presence blest.

The Communion Rite

- At the Saviour’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come,

thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil.

OR

Pater noster, qui es in cælis:

sanctificétur nomen tuum;

advéniat regnum tuum;

fiat volúntas tua,

sicut in cælo, et in terra.

Panem nostrum cotidiánum da nobis hódie;

et dimítte nobis débita nostra,

sicut et nos dimíttimus debitóribus nostris;

et ne nos indúcas in tentatiónem;

sed líbera nos a malo.

- Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil,

graciously grant peace in our days,

that, by the help of your mercy,

we may be always free from sin

and safe from all distress,

as we await the blessed hope

and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

- For the kingdom,

the power, and the glory are yours

now and for ever.

(Quia tuum est regnum,

et potéstas, et glória

in sǽcula.)

- Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles:

Peace I leave you, my peace I give you,

look not on our sins,

but on the faith of your Church,

and graciously grant her peace and unity

in accordance with your will.

Who live and reign for ever and ever.

- Amen.

- The peace of the Lord be with you always. (Pax Dómini sit semper vobíscum.)

- And with your spirit. (Et cum spíritu tuo.)

Then, if appropriate, the Deacon, or the Priest, adds:

Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

  have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

  have mercy on us.

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world,

  grant us peace.

OR

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccáta mundi:

  miserére nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccáta mundi:

  miserére nobis.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccáta mundi:

  dona nobis pacem.

- Behold the Lamb of God,

behold him who takes away the sins of the world.

Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

- Lord, I am not worthy

that you should enter under my roof,

but only say the word

and my soul shall be healed.

OR

- Ecce Agnus Dei,

ecce qui tollit peccáta mundi.
Beáti qui ad cenam Agni vocáti sunt.

- Dómine, non sum dignus, ut intres

sub téctum meum:

sed tantum dic verbo,

et sanábitur ánima mea.

Padre, Perdona

R: Signore, ascolta: Padre, perdona!
Fa’ che vediamo il tuo amore.

1 A te guardiamo, Redentore nostro;
da te speriamo gioia di salvezza,
fa’ che troviamo grazia di perdono.

2 Ti confessiamo ogni nostra colpa;
riconosciamo ogni nostro errore;
e ti preghiamo: dona il tuo perdono.

3 O buon Pastore, tu che dai la vita;
Parola certa, Roccia che non muta:
perdona ancora, con pietà infinita.

The Concluding Rites

- The Lord be with you.

- And with your spirit.

The Priest blesses the people, saying:

May almighty God bless you,

the Father, and the Son, + and the Holy Spirit.

- Amen.

At the Cross Her Vigil Keeping

1. At the cross her vigil keeping,
Mary stood in sorrow, weeping,
When her Son was crucified

2. While she waited in her anguish,
Seeing Christ in torment launguish,
Bitter sorrow pierced her heart. Amen

3. With what pain and desolation,
With what noble resignation,
Mary watched her dying Son.

4. Ever-patient in her yearning
Though her tear-filled eyes were burning,
Mary gazed upon her Son.

5. Who, that sorrow contemplating,

On that passion meditating,

Would not share the Virgin's grief?

6. Christ she saw, for our salvation,

 Scourged with cruel acclamation,

Bruised and beaten by the rod.

7. Christ she saw with life-blood failing,
All her anguish unavailing,
Saw him breathe his very last.

8. Mary, fount of love's devotion,
Let me share with true emotion
All the sorrow you endured.

9. Virgin, ever interceding,
Hear me in my fervent pleading:
Fire me with ypur love of Christ
